Top Reykjavik attractions
Reykjavik is a beautiful city by the sea, surrounded by mountains and with plenty of exciting things to do. Visit the old harbour, close to the city centre, where you can go whale watching or just people watching at one of the cafés or restaurants. The city is lovely but we'd recommend taking a day tour out of the city. The popular Golden Circle day trip involves seeing the magnificent waterfall Gullfoss, a geyser in full gushing action and the beautiful national park, Thingvellir. Iceland's most famous geothermal spa, the Blue Lagoon is a must-see while you‘re in Iceland. Also, winters in Iceland are ideal for a northern lights tour (Aurora Borealis). There are plenty of swimming pools and spas in Reykjavik. It's cheap to visit amazing outdoor pools with hot tubs full of geothermal water, as well as saunas and steam rooms. Icelanders talk about "going swimming" but the local sport is really to sit in the hot tubs (or hot pots as the locals call them) and make small talk. Icelanders are coffee fanatics and Reykjavik is full of charming cafés, try a few and talk to the locals. Ask them about the arts and music scene Reykjavik is so famous for, they might know of a free exhibition or concert coming up. The public transport system consists of buses; buy a day or weekend pass, which are a lot cheaper than paying for each ride separately.
